- ECUADOR was the first country in the world to recognise the rights of nature in its constitution, which grants it the status of rights holder. Also it includes and guarantees various collective rights of its indigenous and afro-Ecuatorian peoples, such as the right to maintain ancestral possession of community lands, to be consulted on plans and programmes for prospecting and exploiting non-renewable resources that are on their lands and that may affect them environmentally or culturally, not to be displaced from their lands, or to collective intellectual property of their anecdotal knowledge, among others.
The city of Quito, sheltered by the Virgin of Panecillo, is the highest capital in the world, located at 2,850 meters above sea level. Unlike what many people think, La Paz is not the capital of Bolivia but Sucre.
